How it works

How the extension reads a page.

STEP 1

It finds the article

TextReads detects the main content of the page and skips the menus, ads, and sidebars, so you hear the writing, not the clutter.

STEP 2

It reads in a natural voice

An AI voice reads the page aloud: clear, unhurried, and far from the robotic text-to-speech of a decade ago. Switch voices or speed any time.

STEP 3

You follow along

Each word and sentence is highlighted as it’s spoken, and the page auto-scrolls to keep your place. Click any sentence to start from there.

How it compares

Why a dedicated extension?

Your browser can already read pages aloud, and there are plenty of copy-paste text-to-speech web apps. TextReads works on the page you’re already reading, with a real voice and highlighting that follows along.

FAQ

Common questions.

Yes. The text-to-speech Chrome extension is free to start. The free plan includes unlimited listening with our offline AI voice plus a monthly allowance of our premium AI voices. A Pro plan unlocks unlimited premium-voice listening, subject to a fair-use policy.

Click “Add to Chrome” on the Chrome Web Store, then pin the TextReads icon to your toolbar. Open any article or web page, click the icon, and press play. There is no copy-pasting and nothing else to set up.

Pinning is optional but recommended. It keeps the TextReads icon visible in your toolbar so it is one click away on every page. Click the puzzle-piece extensions menu in your browser toolbar, then click the pin next to TextReads. See our pinning guide for a visual walkthrough.

It works on most articles, blog posts, and long-form web pages. When you press play, TextReads detects the main article content and reads only that part aloud. Navigation menus, ads, and sidebars stay on the page; the extension simply skips them so you hear the writing, not the clutter.

Right now TextReads is built for Google Chrome. Support for more browsers is on the way.

Chrome’s built-in option uses a robotic system voice and reads everything on the page. TextReads uses natural AI voices, extracts just the article so it skips menus and ads, highlights each sentence (and optionally each word) as it reads, and lets you click any sentence to start listening from there.

To generate audio, the text of the page you choose to listen to is sent to our servers, converted to speech, and streamed back. We do not sell your data. See our privacy policy for details.

Add the extension and press play.
